The World of Mechanical Spring Starters –The Alternate Diesel Engine Starting System

We are all familiar with the electric starters on our automobiles and know that using just the ignition key we can crank and start the engine. While electric starters are convenient in most urban conditions there are applications and environments where electric starting is not always the best option.

Say for example, a single electric spark on electrical starter could result in a calamity in an Oil & Gas exploration and storage site.  Think of a life boat where starting of the engine is most essential and the batteries are dead. In such situations good old simple and reliable manual starting by Mechanical starters could come in real handy.

Mechanical starters are a direct mount alternate to the conventional electrical starters used for starting diesel engines.

Engines up to 15 litres can be started by releasing the mechanical energy generated from hand winding of a powerful spring pack. They are popularly known as Spring starters.

Spring starter are the one of the safest engine starting devices and in fact can replace the entire electrical system. They offer great savings in cost of engine starting system and further give substantial reduction in weight.

Fitting is very simple and requires no special skills or tools. Installation can be done in just a few minutes to bring the engine to life. Further the Mechanical starter rotates the engine 2 to 3 times faster than the electric starter; allowing much less time for the heat to dissipate through the cylinder walls during a compression stroke, thus the engine cylinder rapidly reaches the ignition point.

Spring Starters are resistant to moisture or dampness and extremes of temperature. Even if the starter is completely immersed in water for a short period of time (e.g. if the engine compartment in a boat becomes flooded), there will be no detrimental effect. These features make them ideal for applications where safe starting is required.

Their maintenance free nature provides a fail-safe solution in remote or harsh terrain where they find home as a primary or emergency starting device.

Spring starter can also replace Hydraulic or Air / Gas starters for various engine capacities as here too there is a great cost advantage. Hydraulic and Air / Gas starters require special skills and installation and adequate parameters like reservoir have to be maintained thus adding to cost and complexities.

Startwell spring starters are leaders in the field of mechanical starters for diesel engines. They have been in use for over 30 years; there are over 30,000 mechanical starters in service worldwide. Distributed by Industrial Diesel Products Inc., ( Catering to Mining, Oil & Gas, Marine, Construction, Industrial, Defence, Power and Energy sectors, Estd.1986) there are many successful installation across North America.  For more information visit our website
